Here is a guide about conducting a secondary survey when you are caring for a casualty before the ambulance arrives. Soooo many things to remember, there are probably a lot more, comment below to help educate us all!

An unconscious casualty laying on their back may experience relaxation of the muscles & an inability to keep the airways open, due to the tongue falling to the soft pallet. This is why we always place them in a side or recovery position if they are breathing normally.

When it's hot ☀️🌡️ weather remember to stay cool & hydrated. If you start feeling thirsty 🥛 you are most likely already dehydrated 😳. Using Electrolytes can help tissues absorb water but only use as directed on the packet or by a doctor or pharmacist.

If you have already tried the back blows and the chest thrusts while the casualty was conscious, then at commencement of CPR, we would always recommend that you attempt those breaths as it just might move it out of the airways.

Sometimes this may be an option to move a conscious or unconscious casualty.. Remember not to injure yourself in doing so, keep your back straight, bend at the knees and don't twist & turn, use those powerful muscles in the thighs to assist.

Poison Information Centre (13 11 26) receive most calls related to paracetamol. An over use of this can cause the liver damage & can even cause death.

Helping someone as quickly as possible when they are sick or injured or even require CPR is our role as a first aider until more advanced help arrives.

Therapeutic Hypothermia for treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury in the first hours after the incident. some great results for adults but no looking so good for children.

Can you over hydrate your body? People can over hydrate which can cause more severe symptoms, such as: muscle weakness, spasms, or cramps. seizures even death.

Not every person who is breathing deeply or rapidly has hyperventilation syndrome. Other more serious conditions which could cause this include: asthma attack, heart failure, pulmonary embolus, heart attack, spontaneous pneumothorax, some poisoning incidents, uncontrolled diabetes.

Some causes of unconsciousness are syncope (loss of consciousness due to lack of blood flow to the brain) dehydration. problems with the heart's rhythm. neurologic syncope (loss of consciousness caused by a seizure, stroke, or transient ischemic attack). Essential to check if they are breathing normally and follow your DRSABCD Action Plan!

Prior to 1969, Australia did not have a national number for emergency services; the police, fire & ambulance services possessed many phone numbers, one for each local unit. Now we have one national number. B-Calm & B-Ready if you have to make that call.
